Where is La Palma Island?

La Palma Island, Canary Islands - Travel Guide

Unless you are from the Canary Islands or you are a stargazer, you may have never heard of La Palma Island. La Palma, know to many as Star Island or Isla Bonita, is rarely considered by tour operators and is guarded as a hidden treasure by the Spanish. Not only do the Spanish consider it to be special, since 1983 it has been included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO, and 35% of the land has been declared protected areas.

San Miguel de la Palma (widely know as La Palma) is one of the Canary Islands, and is located 80km west of Tenerife. The total population of the island is about 90,000 and it has an area of 743km² (about 40kmx20km).

The capital of the island is Santa Cruz de la Palma, which is in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Of the three volcanoes present on the La Palma island only one is still active (the last eruption was that of Teneguia in 1971). The highest point on the island is Roque de los Muchachos with its peak at 2,426m above sea level, and it is located in the Caldera de Taburiente national park.

Thanks to La Palma’s climate, and mainly due to the fact that the clouds form between 1 and 2km above sea level, the peak of Roque de los Muchachos (therefore above the clouds) is home to the astronomical observatory Roque de los Muchachos.
The Roque de Los Muchachos observatory houses telescopes from several different countries, and these are managed by both the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias and the countries that own them.

La Palma island’s agricultural sector is almost completely dependent on the large amount of banana plantations, whose produce are mainly sold in the Spanish market.
The production of almonds also counts for a significant amount, and you should definitely experience the view of the almond trees in bloom on the northern part of the island.
An excellent sweet, dry Malvasia wine is also produced on La Palma, along with honey rum and tobacco, used in the production of the famous cigars from La Palma, called Puros Palmeros.

The climate here is amazing with temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees all year round (Since moving to La Palma island we have been able to swim in the sea almost every day).

The La Palma island’s landscapes, along with its climate are quite diverse. Generally, up to 500 meters above sea level the climate is very moderate, it turns more continental up to 1550 meters, and it can be very harsh at Roque de los Muchacos, where in winter it may even snow.
La Palma’s sky is one of the clearest in the world and at night lunar craters and the Milky Way are visible to the naked eye.
Far too often, tourism websites describe the island as a paradise for nature and trekking lovers, but they fail to mention that it lays in the Atlantic ocean, and its beautiful, pristine beaches remain unspoilt.
