Roque de los Muchachos Stargazing Experience

We meet directly at the summit of Roque de los Muchachos, where this experience begins in one of the most important astronomical sites in the world. We take a short walk around the observatory area, enjoying views of the Caldera de Taburiente and watching how the light gradually transforms the landscape as the afternoon unfolds. Along the way, you will learn in a simple and engaging manner how some of the most advanced telescopes on the planet work, and why La Palma is such a privileged location for observing the night sky. As night approaches, we leave the observatory area (which remains closed during observation hours), just as the domes begin to open like eyes to the universe. We then move to a nearby, comfortable and carefully selected spot to enjoy the most magical moment of the day. There, we watch the sunset above the sea of clouds, at over 2,000 meters above sea level, in a truly unique setting. As darkness falls, the sky gradually transforms, revealing one of the clearest and most protected night skies in the world. We conclude the experience by exploring the universe using a portable telescope and with the naked eye: Planets (depending on the season) The Moon Stars and constellations Deep-sky objects All accompanied by clear, engaging explanations adapted to all levels.

STARGAZING IN LA PALMA. ONE OF THE BEST SKIES IN THE WORLD

A unique experience designed to help you discover the sky like never before, from one of the best stargazing locations in the world: Roque de los Muchachos.

Thanks to the exceptional quality of the sky in La Palma, the night reveals a truly spectacular view: the Milky Way, thousands of stars, and, under the right conditions, the detailed surface of the Moon with remarkable clarity.

This experience combines a high-altitude sunset with guided stargazing, led by expert guides who will help you understand the night sky in a simple and engaging way.

During the activity, we use a portable telescope alongside naked-eye observation to discover:

  • Planets (depending on the season)
  • The Moon and its features
  • Constellations and major stars
  • Deep-sky objects

The experience takes place several days a week, depending on the season and sky conditions, and lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

At the end, you will have time to enjoy the sky on your own and even take night photography in this exceptional setting.

LA PALMA IS A STARGAZING DESTINATION

What is astrotourism?

Astrotourism is a way of traveling that invites you to discover the night sky in privileged natural environments, far from light pollution.

More than simply observing stars, it is an experience that combines landscape, science, and emotion: contemplating the vastness of the universe, learning to recognize constellations, and understanding what we see—always accompanied by expert guides.

In La Palma, this experience reaches an exceptional level. The island offers one of the clearest and most protected skies in the world, thanks to its location, altitude, and strict regulations that limit light pollution.

From unique places such as Roque de los Muchachos, the sky becomes a true natural spectacle: thousands of stars, the Milky Way, and a clarity rarely found in other destinations.

Astrotourism is, ultimately, a different way of traveling—slower, more mindful, and deeply connected to nature… and to the universe.

LA PALMA IS A CERTIFIED TOURIST DESTINATION AND STALIGHT RESERVE

Astroturismo La Palma Osservazione Astronomica delle Stelle

La Palma, a Starlight Destination

La Palma has been a Starlight Tourist Destination since 2007, an international recognition that certifies the quality of its night sky for astronomical observation.

The Starlight certification is an initiative supported by organizations such as UNESCO, which promotes the protection of the starry sky as a scientific, cultural, and environmental heritage.

Its main goal is to preserve one of our most valuable and fragile natural resources: the darkness of the night sky, essential for both science and human well-being.

A globally protected sky

La Palma offers exceptional conditions thanks to:

  • Its altitude and geographical location
  • The purity of its atmosphere
  • A pioneering regulation known as the “Sky Law”, which controls light pollution

All of this has enabled the development of world-class scientific facilities such as the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, one of the most important astronomical complexes in the world.

A unique natural heritage

The Starlight project in La Palma not only protects the sky but also promotes its value for:

  • Science
  • Education
  • Culture
  • Sustainable tourism

Preserving the quality of the night sky is, today, a way of safeguarding a natural heritage that is disappearing in many parts of the world.

When you gaze at the sky and fix your eyes on a star, if you feel a shiver beneath your skin, don’t reach for warmth, don’t try to cover up — it’s not the cold, it’s just love.
