Volcanic hike to the Tajogaite volcano crater

Volcanic activity has been the main force behind the formation of La Palma, which together with El Hierro is the youngest island in the Canary archipelago. During this excursion, we will explore the island’s most recent volcanic events. La Palma has experienced eight eruptions in the last 500 years, the most recent beginning on September 19, 2021, creating the youngest land in Spain and profoundly transforming the landscape of the Aridane Valley. We will travel by taxi to the protected area of the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park, reaching Llano del Jable, in the municipality of El Paso, at approximately 1,200 meters above sea level. The journey takes about 15 minutes. We will begin the route following part of the first trail created to approach the Tajogaite volcano. We will then take a detour along a local path with a gentle uphill slope, crossing an old cultivation area with fig trees, mulberry trees and chestnut trees. It is surprising to see how these trees have managed to thrive despite the proximity of the eruption. As we continue, the landscape gradually changes. The pine trees, fully regenerated in the first section, give way to a more striking area where a line of dry trees with orange tones clearly shows the intensity of the eruption and its effects on the environment. Very close to the crater, we will descend along a steep path covered with pyroclasts until reaching the edge of the volcanic vents. From this point, the striking colours, fumaroles and recent volcanic landscape offer one of the most impressive views of the entire route. The return will follow the eastern side of the volcanic cone, continuing to provide spectacular perspectives of the volcano and lava flows. After walking approximately two and a half kilometres along a path with a gentle uphill slope, we will finish the route and return to the meeting point by taxi. Our guides, who experienced the eruption firsthand, will share details and insights throughout the excursion to better understand this historic event.
