Volcanic activity has been the main force behind the formation of La Palma which, together with El Hierro, is the youngest island in the Canary archipelago. During this excursion, we will explore the island’s most recent volcanic events. La Palma has experienced eight eruptions in the last 500 years, the most recent beginning on September 19, 2021, creating the youngest land in Spain. We will access the protected area of the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park by vehicle, reaching Llano del Jable, in the municipality of El Paso, at approximately 1,200 meters above sea level. The journey takes about 15 minutes. Walking across volcanic ash and lapilli deposited in the area, we will understand the impact of the eruption on the vegetation and discover the extraordinary regenerative power of the Canary pine, one of the main protagonists in the recovery of the landscape. As we approach the crater, at less than 300 meters distance, we will enjoy impressive views of the lava flows that affected several areas of the Valle de Aridane, forever transforming the geography of the island and the lives of many people. Our guides, who experienced the eruption firsthand, will share insights and personal stories to help better understand this historic event.

Groups are limited to a maximum of 14 participants, allowing for a more personal experience and better interaction between the guide, visitors and the surrounding environment. We aim to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, respecting the pace of all participants and, especially, the place we are exploring. This is an extremely fragile natural environment, with great geological value, which we must understand and protect at the same time. In this way, you can enjoy a more authentic and respectful experience at the Tajogaite volcano and the volcanic landscape of Cumbre Vieja.
