THE ISLAND OF BANANAS

THE ISLAND OF THE BANANAS

Discovering an organic banana's plantation

BANANA, THE MOST COMMON CROP IN LA PALMA

Bananas are the main source of the island's economy, along with tourism. Approximately 40% of the cultivated area on La Palma is dedicated to the cultivation of bananas. The products grown are mainly destined for the Spanish market, around 95%. The large area of land it occupies, added to its importance in economic terms, make the banana a factor of capital social, economic and environmental importance for the island. For some years now, more and more farmers have decided to opt for an ecological, sustainable crop, without the use of pesticides and respectful of the environment, which, being an island, is even more fragile.

Our friend Fran has been an example for the island: after several years of hard work, he managed to transform a monoculture into a lush subtropical garden. An edible forest based on the laws of permaculture waiting to be visited and discovered.
